THE NATIVITY, a miniature by Willem Vrelant or his workshop, on a leaf from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT BOOK OF HOURS ON VELLUM

[Bruges, c.1460]
171 x 113mm. Arch-topped miniature showing the Virgin and Joseph in adoration of the Christ child, with the annunciation to the shepherds in the background, a small grotesque, music-making angel and trumpet-playing monkey within the four-sided border of acanthus in blue, green and gold with gold and black dots (some smudging and fading). This miniature would have introduced Prime in the Office of the Virgin, and is in the style of Willem Vrelant and his workshop. Vrelant, who was active in Bruges from at least 1454 until his death in 1482, was one of the favourite illuminators of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy.
