The unusual engraved word DEPOSÉ on this service, made in the year of a Paris Exposition, suggests that this service was exhibited as part of Gorham's display there. Depose, or "by deposit" refers to the fact that the service was formed by battery-deposit, or electrotype, a new technique in the period which duplicated casting and repoussé or hammering work. This exquisite service appears to be formed of electrotype sections and finished with fine hand-chasing.
