Lot Essay

The arms are those of Simpson, as borne by John Simpson of Boston, and appearing on a silver flagon he gave to the Old South Church in 1764. The arms were also used by Simpson families in Scotland.

The flagon bearing these arms was made by Samuel Minott, and the arms are illustrated in A.E. Jones, The Old Silver of American Churches, 1913, p. 56 (also cited in Patricia E. Kane, Colonial Massachusetts Silversmiths, 1998, p.693).
