Dated 1823 this exuberant sampler wrought by Jane Bailey is an extraordinary accomplishment. As Jane Bailey is a fairly common name there exist many possibilities as to her genealogy. Stylistically however, this needlework sampler is possibly from Maryland or Delaware. While varying in explicit format, this work bears a connection to a group of fruit and floral samplers made by girls from Maryland and Delaware in an unnamed school illustrated in Betty Ring Girlhood Embroidery, (New York, 1993), Vol. II, pp. 494-497.
