Known as "royal purple" or "Solferino," purchased in 1861 and reordered in 1865, during the Johnson administration, this French porcelain pattern dinner service was completed with imported blanks from various French factories. The blanks were decorated in New York by the firm E.V. Haughwout & Co. A subsequent large re-order of this service pattern was placed in 1873 during the Grant Administration and was manufactured and decorated by Haviland & Co. Limoges, France. There were thirty-six custard cups in the original order with a blue band. Mrs. Lincoln changed the color to the then fashionable purpleish-red color which she favored in her wardrobe as well as her interior design schemes.
