Lot Essay

With its serpentine front rail, gadrooned molding, five-legged design and squared ball-and-claw feet, this card table represents the quintessential form associated with New York during the Chippendale era. The table's broad rails, thick gadrooning and three-dimensional leaf carving make it a particularly robust example. For more on the form, see Morrison H. Heckscher, "The New York serpentine card table," The Magazine Antiques (May 1973), pp. 974-983).
