Lot Essay

The Biblical narrative of Jael and Sisera is obviously the focus of this picture but the viewer should not overlook the attention paid to naturalistic details by the artist. Particularly notable is the simultaneous appearance of the sun and the stars in the background sky. This event does occur in nature at certain times of the year and its representation here shows that a great deal of time was spent by the artist observing the remarkable details of nature.
