Candlestands such as this one became staples in the parlor rooms of most Philadelphia homes. As David Barquist notes, "An immense number of stands [were] made in Philadelphia and environs during the second and third quarters of the eighteenth century" and listings in the 1772 price list cite a walnut "folding Stand 22 Inches [diameter] with A box plain top and feet" to cost 1.50 (Barquist, American Tables and Looking Glasses (New Haven, 1992), p.244). This particular candlestand exhibits the quintessential style favored in the region. For a series of similar examples featured in the Yale University Art Gallery Collection see Barquist, figs. 130-132, p. 244-246.
