The Chevalier de Souza Correa, Diplomat, was born in Brazil and came to England, circa 1873, as Attaché to the Brazilian Legation. After a period of living in Rome, Correa returned to London in 1890 and took up the position of Secretary and Minister in London. His formal title at the time this drawing was executed by 'Spy' in 1898 was Envoy-Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of Brazil. Despite his tremendous popularity in English society, he remained a bachelor. His interests were music, particularly opera, and horse-racing.

Having resided among us for so long he has become quite endeared to us; and it is commonly believed that he likes the English almost as well as they like him.
