Closely related to Tintoretto's painting in the Sala Superiore in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, painted in 1575-81 (R. Pallucchini and P. Rossi, Tintoretto. Le opere sacre e profane, Milan, 1982, no. 350, fig. 453). The painting bears a number of minor differences with the drawing, mainly in the position of the leg of the angel holding the chalice, unfolded in the painting. In the drawing the artist had finally decided to raise the leg, after having covered the leg with white heightening.
Although no other drawings by Tintoretto of this finished type are known, the pentimenti in the present work, the differences in composition and the quality of the handling all suggest a close association with his hand.
