Lot Essay

Comparable red chalk figure drawings by Vannini, with similar emphasis on the hands and the strong contours, are in the Louvre (C. Monbeig Goguel, Dessins Toscans XVIe-XVIIIe siècles, II, 1620-1800, Paris, 2005, nos. 614-5), while a figure of remarkably similar proportions and pose, albeit in reverse, appears in the artist's Martyrdom of Saint Apollonia in the Villa di Poggio Imperiale, Florence (G. Cantelli, Repertorio della Pittura Fiorentina del Seicento, Florence, 1983, no. 697).
