Lot Essay

This drawing bears the same numbering as a series of drawings by Courtois in the British Museum (N. Turner, Roman Baroque Drawings, London, 1999, no. 52) and in the Louvre (J. Guiffrey and P. Marcel, Inventaire général des dessins du Louvre et du musée de Versailles, Paris, 1909, nos. 2738-54). These are almost certainly identifiable as those in the Crozat sale in 1741 described by Mariette in the sale catalogue as 'les soixante & douze petits desseins ci dessus formoit un Livret, dans lequel le Bourguignon disposoit les premières pensées de ses tableaux, avec un esprit & une intelligence, dont il n'y a guère que lui qui fut capable; le Bellori l'acheta des Pères Jesuites du College Romain, après la mort de l'auteur, soixante & dix écus'. The album was divided in the Crozat sale into four lots of 18 drawings. The preceeding sheet, number 65, is in the Louvre (no. 2738).
