Two main groups of drawings of the Holy Family can be discerned in Giambattista Tiepolo's monumental drawn oeuvre, a group formerly in an album belonging to Edward Cheney bought in Venice in the 1840s and dispersed by the dealer Parsons after 1914, and a more select group owned by Prince Alexis Orloff. The present drawing is very much of the second type, although it does not appear in the sale of Orloff's collection in Paris on 29-30 April 1920.
