Lot Essay

Delacroix painted several versions of this composition, both as oil sketches and finished works, between about 1841 and 1855 (L. Johnson, he Paintings of Eugène Delacroix: A critical catalogue, Oxford, 1986, III, pp. 232-238). The present drawing is closest to the earliest finished version of circa 1841 now in the Portland Art Museum, Portland (L. Johnson, op. cit., no. 452, pl. 262).
