Lot Essay

This Venus Marina is one of three known versions by Benjamin Edward Spence (1822-1866): one, dated a year earlier, in Hereford Town Hall; another in the Town Hall, Lytham St.Anne's; and the present figure.
Spence's father, William (1793-1849), was a fellow student and friend of John Gibson, who in 1846 persuaded him to send Benjamin to Italy. He entered the studio of R.J.Wyatt in Rome. In 1870 Christie's auctioned works from Spence's Rome studio.
