Lot Essay

A similar relief carved sandalwood with inlaid sadeli and ivory games box, made in Surat circa 1867, was exhibited at the Universal Exhibition, Paris in 1867 and acquired by the India Museum. See page 322, fig 139, Amin Jaffer Furniture From British India and Ceylon, V & A Publications 2001.
