the canepin leaf painted with Spanish dancers with Seville in the distance, inscribed A.S.A. La Infanta Da Mercedes al ser Reyna de Espana, Ussel '78, the verso with a putto holding a crown and monogram O.M.and inscribed 23 Enezo 1878 and a yellow wreath with black veil inscribed Mercedes Junio 1878 and a wedding wreath inscribed Cristina 28 Abril 1879, the ivory sticks finely carved and pierced with urns and flowers, the guardsticks set with enamelled vignettes of a Spaniard with a guitar and a lady in Spanish dress - 11in. Sold with a letter dated 1946 headed Reggia di Capodimonte, Napoli.in Italian stating that it was ...given to me in memory of my Aunt Queen Maria de la Mercedes daughter of the Duke of Montpensier who died 27 June 1878, first wife of King Alfonso XII and sister of my mother Isabella, Countess of Paris, signed H. di Savoia-Aosta, Dowager Duchess of Aosta.

Lot Essay

Manuel Ussel (Usel) de Guimbara, genre and portrait painter, 2nd half 19th century. Born Trinidad (Cuba), exhibited in Seville from 1879 and was Professor at the School of Art from 1881. There was a fan painted by Ussel in the important collection of fans sold at Christie's South Kensington 11 June 1991, lot 286
