Lot Essay
With the outbreak of World-War I, Frans De Geetere fled from his native country and settled in Utrecht in 1916. There he befriended Adrianus de Winter and other Utrecht Modernists and drew the attention of established art-dealers such as Gerbrands and D'Autretsch. In the early 1920s he sailed on his Rhine barge southward and arrived in Paris where the "Marie-Jeanne" was (and still is) moored in the Seine off Quai de Conti. Since that day the artist lived and worked in Paris until his death in 1968.
