Henri van der Velde was born in Amsterdam, where he was taught by H.M. Krabbé. In reaction on the more personal styles Impressionism and Expressionism, Van der Velde chose for objective and detailed reproductions of the beauty of nature, in the tradition of Jan van Eyck and Jeroen Bosch. He often made biblical and mythological scenes.
