Lot Essay

Josef Bato was born in Budapest in 1888. He settled in 1909 in Paris where he was taught by Henri Matisse and Georges Desvallieres. A soldier during World War I, he settled in Berlin in 1918. Over the years Bato developed a neo-classical, realist style in which his liking for the early Italian Renaissance is evident. In 1934 Bato left Europe to escape the Germans. He settled in London after 1945.
