The rectilinear back, clearly influenced by Chinese chairs of the 16th century, also appears on the dining-chairs at Newhailes, East Lothian, a Scottish house which retains much of its original early 18th century furnishings. Some of the Newhailes chairs are illustrated in Country Life (P. Duncan, 'Newhailes, East Lothian - I', Country Life, 29 January 1987, pp. 87 and 89, figs. 6 and 10 and 'The Bended Back Chair', Exhibition Catalogue, London, 13-29 June 1990, no. 14). A pair of chairs with related crossbanded vertical splats and labelled by the St Paul's Churchyard cabinet-makers William Old and John Ody was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 24 November 2005, lot 167.
