Lot Essay

The leg pilasters, with ribbon-frets in the 'Modern' Gothic fashion popularised by Thomas Chippendale's, Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director 1754-62, correspond to those of seat furniture, formerly in the possession of J. Mallett & Sons of Bath before being exhibited at the Burlington Fine Arts Club, 1920, and on an en suite armchair bequeathed to the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1938 by Lady W. S. Theobald (R. Edwards, English Chairs, 1951, no.66).
