The rectangular crossbanded top with centrally-hinged flaps each inlaid with a later oval, enclosing on one side a green baize-lined reading-slope flanked by lidded compartments, enclosing a cedar panel and secret compartment, the other side with a fitted cedar-lined interior with compartments, bobbin holders and a pin cushion, on square tapering legs with brass caps and castors

Lot Essay

This lady's work-table, with elegant herm-tapered legs and golden ribbon-banded tablets of rosewood, relates closely to the manufactures around 1790 of Gillows of London and Lancaster (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, Royston, 1995, fig. 64).
