THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN Vases served as an essential element of rooms decorated in Roman 'columbarium' fashion, and were introduced as part of the George III 'Etruscan' style that evoked 'sacrifices at Love's altar' in antiquity. The antiquarian Thomas Hope (d. 1831 ), promoted the fashion in his London house guide, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807. Grecian and antique vases and urns were displayed in vase rooms at both his London mansion and Surrey villa, and some of them also featured in Henry Moses's furniture pattern books entitled A Collection of Antique Vases, Paterae, Tripods, Candelabra, Sarcophagi etc., 1814.

With cartouche-shaped cresting flanked by a reeded bar, above a padded back with outscrolled arms, squab cushion, pair of bolster cushions and pair of scatter cushions covered in covered in red, blue and black striped repp, above a panelled seat rail, on turned tapering reeded legs with reeded later brass caps and castors, the toprail with restorations and with later pine-cone finials
