Lot Essay

The chairs' Grecian klismos backs, with central paterae, derive from a French antique fashion introduced around 1800 by the connoisseur Thomas Hope (d. 1831) and featured in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl. 11, figs. 3 and 4). Parlour chairs, with related backs, were supplied to Mere Hall, Cheshire in 1813 by Messrs. Gillow of London and Lancaster (see Christie's house sale, Mere Hall, 23 May 1994, lot 106).
