The altar-pedestal table, with mosaiced marble top, is likely to have been commissioned for Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire around 1816 by John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford and designed by, or executed under the direction of his architect Jeffry Wyatt, later Sir Jeffry Wyatville (d. 1840). Its pilaster support, enriched with sunk and reed-framed tablets, is supported at the angles by Grecian-scrolled pilasters, while its stepped plinth is raised on Louis Quatorze 'stump' feet enriched with reed-gadroons, in the manner of André-Charles Boulle. The white marble top is inlaid with a chequered mosaic of marbles as used for the Sculpture Gallery'’s 'Roman pavement' floor.
