The green leather-lined rectangular top above a frieze mounted on each side with floral paterae flanked by stylised foliage and fitted to the front with three drawers, the angles decorated with helmets, on shaped square supports terminating in paw feet, joined by an H-shaped stretcher, the underside numbered '673', the lock stamped 'SCHMIT 22 R. DE CHARONNE PARIS'

Lot Essay

The celebrated rue de Charonne firm of Frederic Schmit, founded in 1856, became known as Schmit & Cie around the time that they exhibited at the Paris 1889 Exhibition. An album of the firm's designs, dating from the early 20th century, was sold at Christie's, London, 26 February 1998, lot 405.
