Lot Essay

Jean-Claude Martinet and Guy Wildenstein will include this painting in their forthcoming Marquet catalogue raisonné being prepared under the sponsorship of the Wildenstein institute.

Painted in 1936 when Marquet spent the summer in Venice, the present work belongs to a series painted by the artist in the summer of that year depicting Venetian scenes. In the first days of his trip, Marquet stayed at the Danieli Hotel, but it was in a small pension house, Pensione Bucintoro, that Marquet found the most favourable conditions for painting. The four windows to his room opened on to the laguna and on the Riva degli Schiavoni, a view which inspired Marquet to depict the contrasts of the old Venice in all its historical beauty and and the new presence of modernity as depicted by the presence of the battleships. One may recognise from left to right the Palace of the Doge, the Campanile of San Marco, the customs house and the Dome of the Salute.
