Prof. Dr. Matthias Eberle will include this painting in his forthcoming supplement to the Liebermann catalogue raisonné under no. 1899/21a.
Badende Knaben am Meer is a preliminary study for Liebermann's famous large-scale canvas Badende Knaben of 1900 (E. 1900/1). Liebermann executed fifteen oil sketches of the coastline and bathing boys during the summer of 1899 in preparation for this composition (the present work being one of the more finished compositions), which he completed in his Berlin studio in the winter of 1899-1900 and exhibited to wide acclaim at the Berlin Secession in the spring of 1900.
