APPARENTLY UNMARKED, RETAILED BY GABRIEL HERMELING, COLOGNE, DATED 1900
In the early 16th century style, tapering circular, the swirling lobed sides engraved with foliage scrolls, the foot with an applied band of leaves, the detachable cover lobed and with openwork border and finial, the interior of the cover applied with a portrait medallion of the Kaiser, enamelled '17. Mai 1900', contained in a fitted red silk lined leather covered case, the case labelled 'GABRIEL HERMELING HOF-GOLDSCHMID & EMAILLEUR KöLN.'

Lot Essay

The Kaiser was represented at the christening by his first cousin Prince Albrecht of Prussia (1837-1906), Regent of Brunswick, the grandson of King Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia (1797-1840). Prince Henry was christened with a second name William after his godfather.
