Lot Essay

Princess Henry and her mother Queen Victoria were the only godparents able to attend the christening in person. Princess Henry of Battenberg was born Princess Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She married Prince Henry of Battenberg in 1885 after whom Prince Henry of Gloucester was named. Princess Beatrice was widowed on her husband's death in 1896 from a fever caught on an expedition to the Asante in West Africa. She was a close companion of her mother's and edited her diaries after her death.
