Frederick 1st Earl Roberts, after whom Prince Henry took his third name, was in South Africa at the time of christening. He was serving as commander-in-chief of the British forces in the campaign against the Boers. He was represented at the service by General Sir Dighton Probyn (1833-1924). Roberts' distinguished career had been founded on his service in India. He had been awarded the VC during the Indian Mutiny and commanded the British forces during the second Afghan Wars. He was commander-in-chief of Madras and later India and on his return from South Africa he was made a Knight of the Garter, raised to the rank of an Earl and made Commander-in-Chief of the British army. He died of pneumonia contracted while visiting the troops at St. Omer in the early days of the First World War.
