Lot Essay

The Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors received it first charter from King Edward III in 1327. It is both sixth and seventh in the order of precedence of the Great Twelve City Livery Companies as a result of a dispute with the Skinners' Company in the late 15th century. An elegant solution was devised by the Lord Mayor in 1484, who decreed that one year the Merchant Taylors were to be sixth and the Skinners seventh with the positions being reversed the year after. This gave rise to the phrase being 'at sixes and sevens'. The Hall dates from the 14th century but has gone through two major restorations; following the Great Fire of 1666 and after damage sustained during the Second World War.
