Lot Essay

Samuel Alken Sen. entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1772, winning a silver medal the following year. He established a reputation as an aquatinter and etcher, as well as a leading sporting artist. He had four sons, including Samuel Alken Jun. (1784-c.1825) and Henry Alken Sen. (1785-1851), all of whom continued in their father's profession, establishing the Alken family as an important dynasty in the history of sporting art.
