Samuel Henry Alken is also known as Henry Alken Junior, being the first son of Henry Alken Senior (1785-1851). It is likely that he studied under his father, and his works are stylistically very similar. He worked in both watercolours and oils, favouring small picture sets such as the present work. His hunting scenes were particularly popular, although he also painted several minority sports including prize-fighting, cock-fighting and bull-baiting.
