Flowered and 'Etruscan' pearled paterae (libation-plates) embellish the volutes of the sofa's Roman 'triclinium-couch' arms, while festive ribbon-twist guilloches weave its frame in garden-trellis fashion. 'French' chairs and sofas of similar character were commissioned for St. Giles's House, Dorset by the 4th Earl of Shaftesbury (d.1771), whose wife (d.1758) subscribed to the celebrated furniture pattern-book, The Gentleman and Cabinet-maker's Director, issued by Thomas Chippendale (d.1778) of St Martin's Lane (A.Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, p.194, fig.202). The pattern for the woven guilloche featured in A.Wilson's, The Antique and Modern Embellisher, 1766 (pl.41) under the title of 'Indian Frets for Chinese Architect(ure)'.
