The present picture shows the artist's local hunt at Melton Mowbray, and is one of a celebrated series of hunt 'scurries'.
Painted to commemorate a successful run with the Quorn Hounds from Coplow to Ranksborough, Ferneley captures the moment with painterly skill. Viewed from Tilton Hill, the Squire, George Osbaldeston, is shown in the centre on Assheton, a horse famous at the time for its powers of endurance. To his left is Mr Holyoake on Crossbow, and on his right, Sir Harry Goodricke on Doctor Russell.
