Lot Essay

Hollams was a painter of equestrian portraits, she studied at the Calderon School of Animal Painting in Kensington and the Atelier Julian in Paris. She worked with great speed, painting horse and dog portraits to satisfy her many commissions. She is alleged rarely to have discussed money for a painting, but her butler always waited to bid goodbye to clients with a silver salver, on which they were expected to place £25 in cash. Her patrons included the Earls of Sefton, Beatty and Lord Cornwallis.

Both this and the previous Lot hung in Prince Henry's Study at York House, St.James's Palace, and are believed to depict horses that belonged to the Prince.
