Lot Essay

Princess Helena Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein (1870-1948) was the daughter of Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein (1831-1917) and Princess Helena (see lot 340), daughter of Queen Victoria, and she was the sister of Princess Marie Louise (see lot 337). She was born at Frogmore House in the Home Park at Windsor, and was named Victoria Louise Sophia Augusta Amelia Helena, but her family gave her the nick-name 'Thora'. Her parents lived at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Greta Park and the princess spent most of her childhood there, often in the company of her grandmother.
Princess Helena Victoria devoted much of her time to charity, including the Princess Christian Nursing Home at Windsor where she, like her mother before her, was president. During the First World War she sought permission from Lord Kitchener to send entertainment to the troops serving abroad, and she visited soldiers in France on behalf of the Young Men's Christian Association.
Princess Helena Victoria never married and, after a period of failing health, she died in London on 13 March 1948.
