Lot Essay

A member of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales from 1921, Johnson became well-known for his skilled impressionist-style pictures of Sydney Harbour and its environs. He won the Queen's Coronation Medal in 1953.

Rex Batterbee (1893-1973), an amateur watercolourist, was the first to introduce Western painting to the Aboriginal community in central Australia in the 1930s. His most famous pupil was Albert Namatjira whose watercolours led to the creation of the 'Arunta' school of watercolourists.
