Lot Essay

Another version of this watercolour is in the Royal Collection at Windsor, recorded in Delia Miller's The Victorian Watercolours and Drawings in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London, 1995, no. 4118. Miller's account states that in 1884 Ackermann was paid 25 gns for a watercolour of the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir, it was listed as a present and could not therefore be a payment for the watercolour that had already entered the Queen's collection by April 1883. It is possible therefore that Ackermann's record refers to the present version of the watercolour.
