AN IMPRESSIVE BUNKO [PAPER BOX] AND SUZURIBAKO [WRITING BOX]
Meiji Period (Late 19th-Early 20th Century)
The rectangular bunko with rounded corners and flush-fitting cover, the black ground decorated in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, gold foil, kinpun and nashiji, the exterior with maple trees among clouds, the interior of the cover with pine and cherry trees overhanging rocks beside a river, with mountains in the distance, the interior and base with dense nashiji; the suzuribako similarly decorated, the exterior with a court carriage among maple trees and clouds, the interior of the cover with the river further upstream beneath a cascading waterfall, slate suzuri, silver and gold water-dropper, inset into an elaborate frame continuing the decoration of the interior with further pine trees and rocks beside water, the various writing implements and ink-cake holder with shakudo and gilt mounts decorated with maple leaves and cherry blossom on a nanako ground, silver rims, both pieces with some old wear
17 in. (43.2 cm.) and 10 3/8 in. (26.5 cm.) long respectively
