Edgard von Wedel (1848-1943) was born 16 December at Schloss Gerzlow in Pomerania (now Poland). He embarked on a military career but eventually dropped out of military service to become chamberlain to Kaiserin Friedrich (Crown Princess Victoria, The Princess Royal, H.M. Queen Victoria's eldest daughter) in 1889. He served her devotedly until her death in 1901. Kaiserin Friedrich's son, Kaiser Wilhelm II then took him on as chamberlain and bestowed the title of Graf (Count) on him in 1903. In 1906 he became Kaiser Wilhelm's Zeremonienmeister, master of ceremonies and two years later in 1908 he retired from Royal service.
