8 pen and ink, watercolour and body-colour paintings (each c.340 x c.250mm) on card, matted, all signed by Mason and Pocock. Book: oblong 8° (215 x 183mm). 14 colour illustrations. Original illustrated stitched wrappers printed in colour (light soiling). All within a custom-made red cloth clamshell case.
ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS for this parody of Alice, a fine collaboration between the maritime artist Frank Mason, who is responsible for the sea and landscapes, and Noel Pocock for the figures.
Frank Mason (1876-1965), painter, etcher and illustrator, is best known for his maritime and coastal subjects and is a key member of the Staithes school. He studied at Scarborough College of Arts under Strange, and was elected to the R.B.A in 1904 and the R.I. in 1929.
The watercolours, 8 of the 14 published, were adapted from Tenniel's illustrations for both of Alice's adventures. They include: 'The Mock Turtle and the Gryphon at Robin Hood's Bay', 'The Lion and the Kangaroo at Scarborough', 'Uncle William on the North Sands, Scarborough', 'The Red King at Redcar', 'Alice's Adventure at Withernsea', 'The Aged, Aged Mariner at Hornsea', 'Alice Meets an Old Friend at Saltburn', and 'The Proclamation is Made at Whitby'.
