CAMPE, Joachim Heinrich (1746-1818). The New Robinson Crusoe: an Instructive and Entertaining History. For the use of Children of Both Sexes. Translated from the French. London: John Stockdale, 1788.

4 volumes, 12° (164 x 100mm). 32 wood engravings by John Bewick, 9-page publisher's advertisement. (One plate partially deatched, spotting, some browning.) Contemporary sheep-backed boards, flat spine, labels in manuscript (worn, one volume chipped at head of spine, another torn at foot). Provenance: Susanna Clara Sully (owner's inscription on front free endpaper) -- Edward Pedder Jnr 1800 (armorial bookplate) -- 'Bought at Rev. W[illiam] E[dward] Buckley's sale, Sotheby's, 27.2.93' (inscription on booklabel on front pastedown).

Originally published in German in 1779, the author's French translation appeared in the same year, while his English translation followed in 1781. 'This Stockdale edition differs from Campe's translation but was the one which had the greater success in England. In writing of a castaway who met his adventures through defective education, Campe tried to combine the story quality of Defoe with the practical applications of Rousseau' (Osborne). Buckley, fellow and tutor of Braesnose college and vice-president of the Roxburghe Club, was a noted bibliophile and editor of early English literature. His library was sold in two portions, over 22 days in February 1893 and April 1894. Osborne 239; Harvey Darton p.114. (4)
