BECON, Thomas (1512-1567). The Reliques of Rome, contayning all such matters of Religion, as have in times past bene brought into the Church by the Pope and his adherentes. London: by Iohn Day, 1563.
Small 8° (131 x 85mm). Black letter. Woodcut title surround and full-page portrait of the author on title verso, extra-illustrated with one-page 19th-century illuminated manuscript on vellum. (Title shaved with slight loss, and with neat repairs to three margins, slight worming to Mm1-Nn7, occasional old light dampstaining.) Late 19th-century continental silver binding over red velvet, the covers chased and pierced with scrolling foliage, the figures of a huntsman, a falconer, a maiden, and animals and birds of the hunt, the spine in four panels with chased and pierced scrolling foliage, beaded borders, flower and foliage clasp, the clasp and upper cover struck with pseudo-marks for Augsburg. Provenance: C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale 22 May 1939, lot 162).
A 'newly corrected and greatly augmented' edition, following Day's earlier edition of c. 1560. The Schwerdt catalogue notes, incorrectly, that the very attractive pierced and chased silver binding is 'a 16th-century German binding' -- in fact it is a late-19th century copy. Schwerdt IV, p.10; STC 1755.
