COX, Nicholas (fl. 1673-1731). The Gentleman's Recreation in four parts, viz. hunting, hawking, fowling, fishing. Third edition with the addition of A Hunting-Horse. London: J. Phillips and H. Rhodes, 1686.
4 parts and appendix in one volume, 8° (186 x 110mm). Engraved additional title by W. Sherwin, 4 folding engraved plates by W. Dolle, extra illustrated with portrait of James II. Each part with separate title. (The larger plate laid down and with minor losses to captions supplied in pen and ink, small repair to verso of another plate, title to part one rehinged, some lower margins lightly waterstained, occasional small holes and soil marks, without blank m8.) Early 19th-century red calf attributed to Thomas Gosden, covers with blind-stamped strapwork design, gilt spine, the centre panel tooled with a hunting-horn and figure of a fisherman, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Thomas Gosden (bookplate) -- Edward N. Winstanley (bookplate).
Third edition which included Gerard Langbaine's 'The Hunter'. There were two issues. Somewhat confusingly, the pagination and collation of this second issue, as given in ESTC, are at variance with each other. In this copy, the 8-page table for the 4 parts is bound after part one, agreeing with the ESTC collation but not with the pagination which places it before the appendix. Though actually intended as an appendix to part one, 'The Hunter' is bound in as a final part, following the pagination in ESTC but not the collation which places it before part four. The binding on this copy was probably by the shop of its early 19th-century owner, Thomas Gosden. Westwood and Satchell p. 67 and p. 68n: 'makes us acquainted with divers miraculous streams and unaccountable fishes'; Schwerdt I, pp. 122-23 (1st ed.): 'well composed, comprehensive and compact. It fills a space in the not overcrowded list of English hunting and hawking books'; Wing C-6705.
