DE GREY, Thomas. The Compleat Horseman and Expert Ferrier. London: Thomas Harper for Lawrence Chapman, 1639.

2° (278 x 178mm). Engraved equestrian portrait of Charles I by William Marshall. Woodcut illustration, initials and headpieces. (Some light browning and occasional light marking, light dampstaining affecting upper corners of leaves, small hole in F1, printing error affecting text on O3r, 2M4 and 2Q4 torn with small loss, lacking final blank.) Contemporary speckled sheep, covers ruled in blind, paper lettering-pieces, red edges (some rubbing and scuffing, cracks and small wormholes in spine, traces of clasp). Provenance: John Tailor, Cornwall (contemporary manuscript ownership couplet on verso of portrait, draft opening-clause of will on 3[A]1v, and marginal pen-trials).

FIRST EDITION, one of three issues of the edition, which can be distinguished by the imprint. The enduring popularity of De Grey's book can be judged by the fact that a fifth edition was published in 1684. The first part concerns the breeding, riding, diet, and other practical aspects of the care of horses, while the second is devoted to their health and medical remedies. According to STC, the portrait of Charles I was probably produced for this work, although it was also used in another publication of 1639. Huth p. 19; Mellon/Podeschi 23; STC 12205.
