4° (218 x 155mm). Woodcut device on title, 37 woodcut illustrations in the text, mostly large, a few headpieces and initials, with the first leaf blank save for signature. (F4&5 supplied from a smaller copy, small rust-hole in Aa3, crudely repaired tears in Dd5 and Xx2, flaw in Kk2, some light browning and staining.) Contemporary blind-stamped vellum (rather discoloured, a few tears, lacks ties). Provenance: contemporary deleted signature on an endpaper and 6 medicinal receipts in this hand on A1r.

Second edition in English of this French classic which first appeared in 1564, the date of Estienne's death. The first two editions (1564 and 1565) were published solely under Estienne's name by Jean Liébault, his son-in-law; but from 1566 onwards the book appeared under both of their names, and during the 16th and 17th centuries it was the most popular work of its kind, passing through more than a hundred editions all of which contain chapters on hunting and hawking.
