JONSTON, John (1603-1675). A Description Of the Nature Of Four-Footed Beasts, With their Figures Engraven in Brass ... translated into English by J.P. London: for Moses Pitt, 1678.
4° (368 x 220m). 80 engraved plates. (Title repaired in the inner margin, some marginal soiling and tears, occasionally with small loss, a few light dampstains.) 20th-century half morocco, preserving an earlier endpaper (upper fore-corner bumped). Provenance: John Whaley (inscription c.1722) -- Pickering, May 1858 (small stamp and inscription) -- Michael Tomkinson, Franche Hall (armorial bookplate).
ESTC records only 3 copies (Folger, Reading, University of Wisconsin) of this English edition of J.P.'s translation of Historiae Naturalis de quadrupetibus (Frankfurt: Matthaeus Merian, 1650). Jonston's sources were wide ranging, but probably the main influence was Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605). This edition reuses Merian's illustrations, which were extensively reprinted and copied for over a century. An edition printed for the widow of John Jacobsen Schipper, and Stephen Swart, was also published in Amsterdam in 1678. Wing J-1015B.
